*****07/2025: C* Flemmons needs your financial support during cancer treatment and recovery. Info at bottom of bio***** Baptist Generals is a project led by singer/songwriter C*Flemmons. Formed in Denton, Texas as a 2-piece drum and guitar street act, the band evolved to a 5 sometimes 6-member lineup with Flemmons regularly performing solo shows under the same name. Generals has toured and performed with The Shins, Daniel Johnston, Mountain Goats, Vic Chesnutt, Damien Jurado, John Vanderslice, Damien Jurado, Crooked Fingers, Smog, Shearwater, among others. Rightly or wrongly described as an indie folk band, the catalogue defies the tropes of that genre with aggressive arrangements and lush orchestrations, sometimes borrowing from Latin, African and other world rhythms, along with small electronics and psychoacoustic accidents. Live shows at times can dig into the darkest corners of the human experience, conjuring damaged psyches, because "the world is rigged for you to not feel anything." In 2019 Flemmons went through a successful recovery from alcoholism and the band remained inactive through the pandemic. In June 2022, Generals returned for a sold-out show in their hometown of Denton, TX. That was followed Flemmons' discovery and treatment of cancer in 2023. The cancer returned in August 2024.
