Roy Davis Jr., born Roy Davis Earl Jr. in Van Nuys, California, and raised in Chicago, Illinois, is a seminal figure in the house music scene. Influenced early on by pioneers like Lil' Louis, DJ Pierre, Farley Jackmaster Funk, and Marshall Jefferson, Davis began mixing music at 13, blending breaks, disco, and later, house, techno, and acid.
In the late 1980s, he co-founded the production company Phuture and later became an A&R scout for New York's Strictly Rhythm, while also managing his Chicago-based label, Undaground Therapy Muzik. Davis achieved international acclaim with the 1996 release of "Gabriel," a collaboration with Peven Everett, which sold over 200,000 copies and peaked at No. 22 on the UK Singles Chart.
Operating under various pseudonyms, including The Believers, Davis released the 1993 track "Who Dares to Believe in Me?" on Strictly Rhythm, a classic in the house genre. He has also produced and remixed for artists such as Eric Benet, Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Seal, Patti LaBelle, Christina Milian, and Morcheeba.
Throughout his career, Davis has performed at renowned venues worldwide, including London's Ministry of Sound and Tokyo's Club Yellow, and has been inducted into the Frankie Knuckles DJ Hall of Fame.
