The London choir Blossom Street, also known as the Blossom Street Choir or the Blossom Street Singers, have become one of Britain's most popular small vocal ensembles. They have performed in major concert venues and often on British radio and television, offering versatile programming that is both original and accessible. Blossom Street were formed in 2003 by director Hilary Campbell, while she and the choir members (currently there are 17) were undergraduates at York University. The group gained exposure early on when they recorded a medley of Christmas carols that were broadcast during a BBC 2 snooker championship. The choir moved to London in 2007, and its membership has remained stable. Other early breakthroughs were performances on ITV1 television at the 60th birthday celebrations of Prince Charles in 2008, and a Queen Elizabeth Hall debut in 2009 as part of the venue's Voicelab series. Blossom Street has gone on to perform at major British venues including St. James Piccadilly, St John's Smith Square, Wigmore Hall, and the Edinburgh Fringe, and has toured Sweden, Spain, and Japan. The group has been especially visible on broadcast media, with appearances on the Classic FM network and multiple times on the In Tune program on BBC Radio 3, most recently in January 2019 with music from their all-female Naxos release This Day. That album, a collection of pieces by women composers that celebrated the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in Britain in 2018, was their third for Naxos, following the holiday album Sleep, holy babe, in 2011, and the British folk song collection Down by the Sea two years later. They have also recorded for Resonus Classics, issuing A short while for dreaming: Choral works by Peter Warlock, in 2014. Blossom Street has prepared a new album of Christmas music by women composers slated for release in 2020. Blossom Street has also spawned a related jazz and pop ensemble, Blossom Close.
