The Cheebacabra is the recording project of Seattle-based producer, photographer, and preschool teacher Paul Cheever (aka Cheeba). At 18 years old, Cheever was pulled into the inner circle of the legendary Dust Brothers production team who redefined the art of sampling with artists such as Beck and Beastie Boys. After three years with them, doing everything from cleaning bongs to editing tracks for the Fight Club score, Cheever began to focus on his own recordings. The first Cheebacabra album, Metamorphosis, was released in 2003. Drawing on influences such as Herbie Hancock, DJ Premier, and Weather Report, The Cheebacabra attempts to combine the organic and soulful instrumentation of ‘70s jazz-funk and fusion with the crisp drums and head-bobbing production of ‘90s hip-hop.
