The Essence is a Post-Punk/New Wave band from Rotterdam, The Netherlands formed in 1984.
They signed to UK label Midnight Music which saw their first album release “Purity” in 1985.
The singles “Endless Lakes” and “ The Cat” were well received. Their sound was reminiscent of vintage Cure to Pink Floyd.
In 1987 the band released their second album titled “ A monument of trust”. The single from that album “ A Mirage” went straight into the top 3 of the Spanish charts and did very well in most of Europe, even catching the attention of the
USA and Asia.
A year later saw their third album “ Ecstasy” with another well received Popsingle called
“Only For You” which video was well played on MTV.
Their Fourth Album “ Nothing Lasts Forever” is
a conceptalbum that was quite melancholic and intense. “Out of Grace” has been on the band’s Live Setlist ever since.
In 1995 “ Glow” was released. It’s a more matured sound with some true gems like “Crack”.
The Band signed a deal with UK label Cherry Red Records and released shortly after the band joined, a Best Off called “ Dancing in the Rain”.
In 2018 the label asked Hans Diener, founder/composer/singer/guitarplayer to make a total overview of the band’s work in the form of a Boxset called “35” which containes all the albums including remixes and never released songs.
The boxset came with a booklet written by Hans, consisting of their history and rare photos.
