The Exempt are a Scottish Garage/Alternative Rock band from Dundee, formed in 2018. The band consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Michael O'Rourke, drummer Andrew Balmer and bassist Sam Goodfellow.
At the beginning of 2019, the band released their debut single 'Hurricane' which was well received, gaining attention from numerous music podcasts, radio stations and blogs. 'Hurricane' remains the most popular song in the band's catalogue with it's catchy melody and bouncy bass line. The trio went on to perform local gigs with well-known bands such as; Ruvellas, The Medinas, BOOTlace, Midnight Alleys, Kendama and Craig Weir, in an attempt to build their audience.
Into April 2019, The Exempt released their second single 'Pretty Faces', taking a more crunchy, rock approach to their sound. The release of 'Pretty Faces' kickstarted the band's busy summer of gigging, playing at a busy Dens Park Beer Festival. The trio continued to play the summer alongside talented musicians; Pete Smith, The MARX, and The 1:21s.
Following on from their busy summer and despite the exit of their former bassist, the band continued to develop their sound and write new songs, resulting in an A-side/B-side release of 'Melody Maker' and 'Diamonds' in late December 2019. These songs were picked up and played by local radio station Wave FM which presented the band to a wider audience.
2020 saw current bassist, Sam, joining the band, adding a new dynamic and feel to the band's sound and image.
