Connecticut's The Guru was formed in 2009 when original members <a href="spotify:artist:1mGWsZpLeNJ9lg5Nh822kq" data-name="Eddie Golden III">Eddie Golden III</a> (vocals and drums), <a href="spotify:artist:6rRqxCKHpl9C5Imf2uinft" data-name="Kyle McEvoy">Kyle McEvoy</a> (guitar) and <a href="spotify:artist:4MT0OmROiGmM8jQceQlmEC" data-name="Colin Sullivan">Colin Sullivan</a> (guitar) were still in the early days of high school together. Frustrated with the lack of under-21 venues in Connecticut at the time, they took matters into their own hands by organizing and promoting shows in the back of a rundown coffee shop in Watertown, CT called Cafe Napoli. The Guru continued to perform locally and regionally as well as release two separate EP's in 2011 and 2012 (<a href="spotify:album:1F6s7rfmGaHZgqSem0ygwY" data-name="Native Sun">Native Sun</a> and <a href="spotify:album:4jmHkdMIbIKrtnVAiRPVW4" data-name="Go Easy">Go Easy</a>), all while the members were still in school.
After a short run, supporting Canadian singer-songwriter <a href="spotify:artist:3Sz7ZnJQBIHsXLUSo0OQtM" data-name="Mac DeMarco">Mac DeMarco</a> in 2013, The Guru would meet Boston-based multi-instrumentalist and engineer <a href="spotify:artist:4Fy6SFCU13mT4Cap2pgxB4" data-name="Adam Straus">Adam Straus</a> through mutual friends. Eventually Straus would join The Guru on bass and help engineer and mix their first and final album, <a href="spotify:album:5uB8C9LPS5V7VHyLPt4xcU" data-name="Pretty Things">Pretty Things</a> in 2014.
