Renowned upholders of the African American ring shout, the McIntosh County Shouters keep the faith, form, and fervor of the generations-old tradition rooted in the Gullah/Geechee region of coastal Georgia. Songs from the shuffle-step devotional movement called “shouting” have historically been used to resist slavery, strengthen spirit, and create moments of emotional communion that are a model for future generations. The McIntosh County Shouters bring classic shout songs and spirituals powerfully into the present.
