With fervid belting and gospel sensibilities á la Sam & Dave, Cairo, Illinois’ duo Chuck & Mac enjoyed a brief if not impassioned career. Formerly of Billy Ball & the Upsetters, Roosevelt “Mac” Matthews linked up with Aubrey “Chuck” Wallace in 1970. The duo cut “Powerful Love,” a gravelly southern ode to unfettered longing, and “The Bear,” a conventional yet infective funk track, with Oliver Sain. With aspirations of making it big, Chuck & Mac brought the masters to Chicago, where blues clubs and proliferating labels seemed to be churning out new stars daily. Chicago’s Twinight label bought the record and issued a one-time promo pressing, but the record failed to yield another deal. Thereafter, Chuck & Mac moved to St. Louis and formed the Hard Tymes Band, which occupied them into the early 1980s.
