The Nautiloids

Rockville, MD-based surf-punk trio the Nautiloids formed in 1964 -- 15-year-old lead guitarist Rick Fulton named the group in honor of a genus of prehistoric undersea creature, settling on the moniker even before recruiting rhythm guitarist Glenn Schaffer and drummer Greg "Mac" Bell. The Nautiloids soon made their public debut at a battle-of-the-bands competition in nearby Lanham, playing enough local gigs to warrant entering Washington, D.C.'s Edgewood Recording Studio in March of 1965 to cut a demo consisting of two Fulton originals, the instrumentals "Nautiloid Reef" and "Nautiloid Surf." A planned single never materialized, and the Nautiloids soon dissolved. Unbeknownst to the original members, "Nautiloid Reef" took on a life of its own thanks to appearances on compilations including Signed D.C. and Concussion!!!, earning cover versions by latter-day surf groups including <a href="spotify:artist:6lAuElAjWwgnVApm6QdWLO">the Waistcoats</a>, the Mongols, and the Dactaris. Fulton also penned Jim Whelan & the Beau Havens' 1965 garage punk gem "Feel So Good." ~ Jason Ankeny
