The Redwalls formed in 2001 in Deerfield, Illinois, led by brothers Logan and Justin Baren with Andrew Langer and Jordan Kozer. After starting as The Pages, they shifted to originals, released Universal Blues in 2003, and soon signed with Capitol. Ben Greeno later replaced Kozer.
Their second album, De Nova (2005), expanded their reach with major-festival appearances and shows with <a href="spotify:artist:2DaxqgrOhkeH0fpeiQq2f4" data-name="Oasis">Oasis</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3hozsZ9hqNq7CoBGYNlFTz" data-name="OK Go">OK Go</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3z6Gk257P9jNcZbBXJNX5i" data-name="Regina Spektor">Regina Spektor</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:0LbLWjaweRbO4FDKYlbfNt" data-name="Kaiser Chiefs">Kaiser Chiefs</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2qV7axHq9Jk7QqFcB3f05A" data-name="The Zutons">The Zutons</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:7C1Wl8H93z5X5UqD8fNE94" data-name="Chris Robinson">Chris Robinson</a> of <a href="spotify:artist:5krkohEVJYw0qoB5VWwxaC" data-name="The Black Crowes">The Black Crowes</a>. Critics took notice — Billboard praised their “fully engaging mix of garage stomp… and fired-up exuberance,” People highlighted their “tough, twangy sound,” and The Boston Sunday Globe called them “the best song-oriented band to emerge from <a href="spotify:artist:2DaxqgrOhkeH0fpeiQq2f4" data-name="Oasis">Oasis</a>’s inner world.”
In 2006, the band traveled to Sweden to record their self-titled third album with producer Tore Johansson (<a href="spotify:artist:0XNa1vTidXlvJ2gHSsRi4A" data-name="Franz Ferdinand">Franz Ferdinand</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1tqZaCwM57UFKjWoYwMLrw" data-name="The Cardigans">The Cardigans</a>). Dropped by Capitol during the 2007 merger, they self-released the Wall to Wall Sessions EP that summer and followed it that fall with their self-titled LP to critical acclaim. ModernGuitars.com praised the album as “their most ambitious endeavor… expanding on sonic territories with an intoxicating blend of melody and attitude.”
After lineup changes and heavy touring, the band went on hiatus in 2012. In recent years, they’ve returned to the studio, revisiting lost sessions and creating new music. The Redwalls are making it clear: their story isn’t over yet.
