The one and only release by this shortlived indie pop band. The release party for this single at The Lansdowne Hotel turned out to be the last ever performance by The Rose Mary’s (and, yes, that redundant apostrophe is indeed part of the band’s name). This single seems to be often tagged as twee pop, or jangle pop, and certainly either description is appropriate. The guitars are certainly very twangy, with jangly pop chords changing about akin to similar early 90s sounds that I could name drop from the same scene (like Hummingbirds, Falling Joys, etc). Meanwhile Lisa Partington’s vocals are very sweet and girlish, reminding me nowadays of Juanita Stein’s sound in Waikiki (pre-Howling Bells). “Freedom Riders” is the pacier song of the two, kicking up some brightly twee and happy vibes. “You Can Talk Now” is the more atmospheric and moody song, with emphasis on a few ringing harmonics and open chords. Damn shame this band didn’t stick. Partington’s voice was later heard as part of Bruce Begley’s Snow Leopards project, while bassist Monaco went into punk outfit Lawnsmell.
