Steven Christopher Johnson is a Mobile, Ala. native musician, singer/songwriter, composer, and producer, who began playing trumpet at age 12 and began reading, writing, composing, and playing music by ear at 13. He began formal piano training on a Full Music Scholarship at age 19 at Faulkner State Community College (Bay Minette, AL) transferring to, and extending his studies at Bishop State Community College (Mobile, AL) in Biology the following 2 years.
Known by some as "Coach" or "Rev" as part of the Gulf Coast Dixieland Band: The Dauphin Street Stompers, a band he co-founded after coming off tour with Brothers of Brass in 2018, adopted the name "The Sound Buryer" after his high school band director remarked, that: "at the presence of his playing, there seemed to be a 'barrier' of sound that you couldn't deny." Inspiration for his artist name also comes from the biblical text Matthew 25:18.
The Sound Buryer got his professional start busking (street playing) solo and with various brass and dixieland bands along the Gulf Coast.
With a combination of formal piano training and sounds he's heard from years of playing on street corners, he infuses those sounds into that of his own original music, specializing in Hot and Cool Jazz Instrumentals, along with R&B, Gospel Jazz, and Afrobeat Rhythms.
His moniker also serves as a reminder to himself and others to never "BURY" their sound, but SHARE their Sound.
