Listening to The Stone Apes feels like stumbling into the after-after party and finding a small group of friends who refuse to let the night end—and that's where they were born. After a wild night in 2020, Graydon overheard his brother Jye freestyling something resembling a complete song. “What was that?!” he exclaimed. Jye shrugged, “Dunno. I just made it up.” From that moment, The Stone Apes were born—five friends from regional Queensland determined to turn Jye’s freestyles into fully polished tracks. The result? Rowdy, tongue-in-cheek, ballsy tunes with a hint of melancholy—just like an afterparty.
The Stone Apes is the brainchild of Jye Kennedy (vocals), Graydon Kennedy (guitar), Ben Thistlethwaite (bass), Jeremy Titmarsh (guitar), and Nick Hooper (drums) who formed “for a bit of fun” after the dissolution of their former bands. This unknown regional ‘supergroup’ then became something more serious after discovering their natural chemistry and tendency for explosive live shows.
Since then, The Stone Apes have developed a sound that bridges the gap between soulful vocals, chant-worthy guitar riffs, and a hard-hitting rhythm section. The group creates an infectious blend of soulful garage-rock and catchy psychedelic pop that quickly gets new audiences shouting along by the second chorus.
Following their Queensland tour with Trophy Eyes and Dear Seattle in late 2023, The Stone Apes take on 2024 with a catalogue of new music that promises to redefine their style.
