The Yearlings are an alternative country group that came together in the unlikeliest of places: Utrecht, Holland. Forming in September of 1999, the combination of bassist Herman Gaaff, drummer Leon Geuyen, vocalist Niels Goudswaard, slide guitarist Bertram Mourits, steel guitarist René van Barneveld, and electric guitarist/vocalist Olaf Koeneman formed out of a similar love of the genre. The band started playing live later that year and immediately began making waves in the local scene. Often playing Dutch venues with similar groups, they managed to play the Ryan Adams afterparty and impressed the singer/songwriter.
The Yearlings' self-titled debut was released in 2002 through Sonic Rendezvous. The follow-up album, Utrecht (2004), embraced a more melodic, pop-influenced sound, reminiscent of R.E.M. venturing into alt-country. Although the band initially disbanded in 2006, they reunited a decade later and released Skywriting in November 2018, which was met with critical acclaim in Dutch national press and abroad.
Their new album, After All The Party Years, was released on January 24, 2025. Since the recording of this album, Martijn Vink (formerly of The Maureens and Asfaltfeeën) has joined the band’s line-up. He’s an old friend of Koeneman and Geuyen, having previously played with them in the Utrecht based jangle-pop band Slurf.
The album got awarded 4 stars in Dutch national newspaper De Volkskrant, as well as the full 5 (!) stars in music magazine Lust for Life.
