These Guy is the long-running music project of Sydney-based songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Joe Saxby. After starting out as a homemade outlet for a series of maximalist, psychedelic lo-fi demos, it took on its proper life in 2015 when Saxby met Josh Coxon (Simi Lacroix) and Eddie L’Estrange while studying music in Brisbane. Almost immediately upon first getting in a room together, the trio started writing and recording material according to their own contrarian DIY ethos: first idea, best idea - and no sticking to any one genre.
That approach has seen These Guy churn out four albums and counting, even as they’ve spent the last decade moving between cities and continents. They’ve traced an unconventional path for themselves; when their first album Lunchbox (2016) earned them a dedicated hometown following in Brisbane, they followed it up by moving to Vancouver BC mere months later and casually unloading their sophomore LP, Who Is It? (2017).
Currently, These Guy are preparing to release their latest record, Australian Hagiographic - a self-described piece of 'sci-fi Australiana'. Haunted by recurrent imagery of alien abductions sprouting up all through the outback, it’s a vehicle for These Guy to pin the whole sunburnt country under their psychedelic microscope - and for better or worse, no one comes out the other end looking all that good.
