Blending a fascination with Parliament funk and electro-pop (<a href="spotify:artist:0dmPX6ovclgOy8WWJaFEUU">Kraftwerk</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:762310PdDnwsDxAQxzQkfX">Depeche Mode</a>), Thomas Barnett advanced the cause of techno by forming one of its most influential labels, Transmat, with <a href="spotify:artist:0v6N0xV7AfHHKVcgUOjC51">Derrick May</a>. Not long after Barnett began making music, he hooked up with <a href="spotify:artist:0v6N0xV7AfHHKVcgUOjC51">May</a> at Detroit's legendary club, The Music Institute. The two recorded "Nude Photo," which launched the record company, but Barnett later left to go back to college.
