Dubbing his style "basement folk" (as opposed to "garage rock"), Queens, NY, native <a href="spotify:artist:4530Z2YZm8uH7c4vrqCXa7" data-name="Thomas Patrick Maguire">Thomas Patrick Maguire</a> has always gone his own way. In the early '00s, Thomas created some recordings at the home of friend and fledgling engineer Mike Estrella, which became his overstuffed 21-track debut, <a href="spotify:album:4uW6BGgNMGZsJtxMmYD4dT" data-name="Pissing Streams">Pissing Streams</a> (2004).
In the meantime, Thomas had also started going to the weekly open mic at the Sidewalk Cafe in NYC's East Village, noted as the home of the Anti-Folk scene (see: <a href="spotify:playlist:5FO5Nk2sLpoxz3Rp9P5f30" data-name="The REAL Sound of Anti-Folk">The REAL Sound of Anti-Folk</a>). At the Sidewalk, Thomas met Dashan Coram of the band <a href="spotify:artist:1Ewhdnqaqm69MySq6UNNMJ" data-name="Huggabroomstik">Huggabroomstik</a>, who was also running his own record label, Luv-A-Lot Records. Luv-A-Lot released Thomas's next album, <a href="spotify:album:5Dx6JKbonLMbHnH9yzhGaw" data-name="Woodside Lanes">Woodside Lanes</a> (2005).
On Christmas in 2007 came a third album, <a href="spotify:album:0HeH8VnNeehaBMUBfTUYI6" data-name="A Slight Return">A Slight Return</a>, made with Jon Sebastian of <a href="spotify:artist:2aDg1rerbAvzXpL3xhcg5L" data-name="The Color Wheels">The Color Wheels</a>. He worked in separate sessions with Sebastian and producer <a href="spotify:artist:4x9SWXWBEq3vvCfOk1DUPh" data-name="Brian Speaker">Brian Speaker</a> on the follow-up album, <a href="spotify:album:0jyaSGVgzhiihpGHmNTaCP" data-name="Temper Tantrums Cause Delays">Temper Tantrums Cause Delays</a> (2010).
For the rest of the '10s, Thomas worked with Staten Island musician and producer Tommy Bones (of <a href="spotify:artist:2O50bh53v9UN5YsnjSFh3G" data-name="Blurple">Blurple</a>) on an increasingly more eclectic series of albums: <a href="spotify:album:054wKR7ltKwJYGra0lE1XZ" data-name="No Suppression, Gentleman Drunk">No Suppression, Gentleman Drunk</a> (2012), <a href="spotify:album:2eiGzdcVSjRzOrNRCocUx2" data-name="In the Bag">In the Bag</a> (2014), <a href="spotify:album:2ButtAMgYGXGEx97E3FMYN" data-name="Irish Silence">Irish Silence</a> (2017), and <a href="spotify:album:799ICOWrV5OKIiLZuwIPFa" data-name="Vicious & Suspicious">Vicious & Suspicious</a> (2019).
