Ultrablue is the contemporary jazz project of New York pianist, keyboardist, composer/producer John Smatla. Blending jazz with pop/rock, latin, Brazilian and R & B influences, Ultrablue combines strong melodies with sophisticated arrangements and world-class musicianship. While Smatla's piano and keyboards often take center stage, the music reflects the collaborative spirit of legendary contemporary jazz groups such as "Fourplay" and "Spyro Gyra".
Over the years, Ultrablue has featured an impressive roster of acclaimed artists including Randy Brecker, Chieli Minucci (Special EFX), David Mann (first call NY-based sax/flute man and producer) Gabriela Anders, New York Voices, Omar Hakim, John Patitucci, Nestor Torres, Gregoire Maret, Romero LuBambo, Pete Belasco, Kevin Mahogany and other major names.
Following a well-received EP in 2025 called "New York Stories" and several successful singles in the last few years on the "smooth jazz" charts, Ultrablue released a new full-length album, "Something Like Summer" over the 4th of July weekend, 2026. Recently, "Storm" a single from the new album, reached #1 in Spain, #11 in the USA while the title track recently reached #1 on a major indie artist chart for urban music. The sound of the new album maintains Smatla's blend of lyrical writing with expressive improvisation and elegant contemporary jazz production which extends beyond the scope of many in the "smooth-jazz" genre.
