Unc D is a bassist, singer and producer from Youngstown, OH. With 21 albums released since 2019, Unc D has reached global audiences with an original blend of jazz, funk and electronic music.
Unc D’s style is the result of tapping into his experience as an uneducated working bassist in Ohio’s jam sesh and funk scenes, while incorporating progressive and experimental electronic production via working with producer/keyboardist <a href="spotify:artist:40Wb8U0vUhR1a7UQXCJ9Ng" data-name="Thin Thicket">Thin Thicket</a>.
Inspired by <a href="spotify:artist:0kbYTNQb4Pb1rPbbaF0pT4" data-name="Miles Davis">Miles Davis</a>, Unc D’s pragmatic approach is due to a philosophic focus on the method of making music, rather than the result. Early releases, such as <a href="spotify:track:0WHRTMjFJSLYItpRqwxYrE" data-name="BLDNTHNDR">BLDNTHNDR</a>, were made using Garageband on an iPad Mini. Bitches Brew inspired splice-editing production, seen on <a href="spotify:album:5U8v21NOdDv8bxvKpveOQ6" data-name="Spagaragus">Spagaragus</a> , used first-takes and long form improvisation to create single-length pieces. In 2022, Unc D invented MUMBLE JAZZ: mixing jazz scatting with autotune and modern hip hop. Previously limited to just bass, MUMBLE JAZZ allowed Unc D to be a lead voice for the first time (see <a href="spotify:album:5jJHiab8xHz0kA3bsBo3h3" data-name="yeah (ooh)">yeah (ooh)</a> ).
