Vijay Yamla comes from a rich musical lineage and started his musical journey when he was very young. He is the grandson of Late Ustad Lal Chand Yamla Jatt, a renowned legendary singer of Punjabi Folk and one who has taken the Tumbi and Punjabi cultural music across the globe.
Vijay shadowed his father and grandfather and travelled with them and alongside performed on different stages with them. He understood, at that very tender age, that the purpose of his life was to serve and keep alive the rich Punjabi folk culture and to take it to all generations across the globe. He hasn’t looked back ever since.
He started his journey by learning the Punjabi folk musical instruments from his father. Accompanying his father and grandfather on multiple stages with other veteran singers inspired him to work harder.
The Tumbi, associated with the legendary Yamla Jatt Family is what Vijay has become known for. His real gurus were his grandfather and his father. He also learnt other instruments like Tabla, Dhol, Algoze, Been, Wanjhali, Dhadd, Bughdu, Morchang, Nagara, Ghada, Chimta and some more.
He has worked and performed with many composers and singers like Amit Trivedi, Shyam Benegal, Gurdas Mann and many others. He has also been on Coke Studio (MTV)
He also worked as a coach at the Royal Academy of Bhangra, Surrey, BC, Canada.
He is now working on creating more single tracks, and promises to keep working towards promoting the folk music and culture of Punjab.
