Welsh experimental musician Elvin Brandhi collaborated with several musicians from the Kampala, Uganda-based Nyege Nyege collective under the name Villaelvin. The project's debut release, 2020's Headroof, is an intense collection of deconstructed, post-industrial rhythms and fragmented vocals.
Brandhi has been actively performing and recording since 2013, improvising stream-of-consciousness lyrics over jittery abstract beats. She is one half of the absurdist noise duo Yeah You along with her father, Gwilly Edmondez, and she has performed with Eugene Chadbourne, Tony Allen, Sensational, and numerous others. She moved into the villa at Kampala, Uganda in April of 2019, and recorded with several of the community's musicians, including percussionist Omutaba, rappers Hakim and Swordman Kitala, and producers Don Zilla and Oise. Headroof, a frantic collision of warped vocals, blown-out percussive blasts, and menacing sound design, was issued by Nyege Nyege's sister label Hakuna Kulala in 2020. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
