Ian O’Neill, the musician known as Yendawg, hails from an agricultural town in upstate New York. He sings as if he’s reading from his diary, unraveling memories across melodies that fuse a slew of musical hues, from bluegrass to midwest emo. He borrows hyperbole from the latter genre and candor from the former, all while doling out small doses of humor in his narrative tunes. Yendawg is at his most introspective in “how to pull off an irish exit,” his debut album courtesy of Fire Truck Records. Whether he’s ruminating on social interactions gone sour, the painful relinquishment of childhood, or dependence, the artist’s sharp self-critique is never out of balance with his earnest love for the little things in life.
