Misnamed after the cult 1969 movie Zabriskie Point, Zabrinski emerged in the early years of the twenty-first century as potential rivals to fellow Welsh psych pop band the Super Furry Animals. Formed in Carmarthen, west Wales in the late 90s by school friends Matthew Durbridge (vocals/guitar), Iwan Morgan (electronics/keyboards), and Gareth Richardson (guitar), the core members of Zabrinski relocated to Cardiff to launch their band’s career. The trio’s self-financed first album, Screen Memories, was released in late 2001 on their own Microgram label. The single ‘Freedom Of The Hiway’/‘Rattlesnake On Ice’ followed in March 2001, forming part of the Boobytrap singles club. Zabrinski’s growing reputation led to support slots for Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Coldplay, and JJ72, with the line-up fleshed out by a number of additional musicians. A recording contract with the Ankstmusik label allowed the band greater freedom in the studio with the albums Yeti and Koala Ko-Ordination upping the ante, tackling psych pop, trip-hop and electronica in an enchanting distillation of Zabrinski’s musical influences.
