Lagos-based pop artist Zamorra is best known for his 2019 hit “Importanter” which propelled him to nationwide fame. The singer-songwriter who has credits on records by pop heavyweights is influenced by the pulsating rhythms of Fuji and Jùjú along with vocal inflections peculiar to Afro Pop and Hip Hop. His love for presenting complex stories in a relatable way is sharpened through his interaction with these genres.
Born Oluwashina Akinkunmi, Zamorra studied Philosophy at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife. While he navigated the school’s famed culture scene, he formed and kept friendships with the likes of <a href="spotify:artist:75VKfyoBlkmrJFDqo1o2VY" data-name="Fireboy DML">Fireboy DML</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:12kjvw4e3gLp6qVHO65n7W" data-name="Blaqbonez">Blaqbonez</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:4oQyXxDBq8FBhsjjS7MbcM" data-name="Cheque">Cheque</a>, moving to Lagos shortly after his graduation. Coming into Africa's biggest music market, Zamorra struggled initially to show potential, but kept improving his sound and learning how to utilize social media to connect with fans. Shortly after “Importanter” went viral on Twitter and a remix from <a href="spotify:artist:6QwPmy9hs9alo36XJ5pwsW" data-name="Small Doctor">Small Doctor</a>, a local Street Hop icon, consolidated him as a talent to watch out for. Zamorra would put out more singles as he built anticipation for his debut project, now signed to Edline Records.
