A. BLOMQVIST has become one of the most listened-to and followed Finnish artists with over 100 million streams worldwide, second to the world-renowned Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.
He first sat at a piano aged four, but the instrument was not necessarily his first love; music was. “I loved the feeling when I got something right, when it sounded good to my ear,” A. BLOMQVIST says. By eight, he was attending the conservatory in his hometown of Jyväskylä and focusing more on his pianistic development.
Other inspirations also loom large in his creative process and music – such as his home in the middle of the country, where lakes, forests, wilderness, and harsh, cold winters dominate the landscape. “It’s calm here,” he says. “You see animals, hear birds singing from your window. It gives me peace.”
It is what A. BLOMQVIST calls a very particular “Finnish type of melancholy. We like to compose in minor keys, and many compositions have a sorrowful sadness to them.”
Pohjola reflects this heartfelt connection to Finnish heritage. "It is a tribute to my roots as a Finnish composer," says A. BLOMQVIST of the record. “Pohjola explores the transformation of Finland from a war-torn nation to today’s happiest country in the world with a specific mission: to touch people.”
Signed to XXIM Records/Sony Masterworks since 2024, he continues to bring his deeply personal take on Finnish classical music to listeners of all generations and from many countries worldwide.
