a forest is both one person, and a creative collective at the same time. A solo artist, singer songwriter, inspired to write about the world around him. Also, a group of talented, selfless friends who are willing to lend time, talent and love to the project.
The origins of a forest started back in 2020, in the midst of the global lock down. Matt (Hughes) was looking to check in with friends across the world, one of these was Andrew Groves, guitarist and singer of the band Arcane Roots. They had lost touch after he moved to Iceland, and had called time on his band to focus on other musical pursuits. Matt sent him a message to see how he was doing, and that he hoped they would see each other again when the world opened up. His reply was something that inspired all of this.
Originally, a pact was struck to help Matt rewrite a collection of songs he had co-written 15 years prior, with his Diesel U Music award winning band Chalk. Soon though things changed, and the interest grew to just get on with new material, write more and more new music and develop a new, 'now' sound.
Fast forward a few years of badly recorded demos, zoom writing sessions and many 'not quite right' songs, to now in 2026. Matt and Andrew, along with mixer and master engineer Mark Roberts, are set to release the debut single 'Something I Need', on March 24th.
