After releasing 2 albums that were heavily influenced by the sounds & instrumentation available in the studio, ALEXANDER decided to take his band into a different environment. Due to the various lockdowns they couldn’t develop their live sound in clubs & festivals so they used a new studio as their stage. The result are 2 new compositions, including Rhinocéros, named after the play of Eugène Ionesco.
ALEXANDER (1987) grew up around the record collection of his parents. He began banging on the Rhodes of his father when he was around the age of 4, but it wasn’t until 5 years later that he actually started piano lessons. After successful completion of the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he was under the tutelage of Kris Goessens, and Barry Harris, Van Popta flew to New York to be taught by Aaron Parks.
Van Popta has now performed in dozens of countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America. He is the band leader of the 16-piece funk and hip-hop collective Re:Freshed Orchestra, which rocked venues like the Concertgebouw and North Sea Jazz. As a sideman he performed with the most diverse artists such as Gregory Porter, Ghostface Killah, Hardwell, and Teus Nobel. Van Popta works as an arranger for the Metropole Orchestra on a regular basis.
