Named after the 1965 semi-autobiographic novel by Albertine Sarrazin and cited as one of Patti Smith’s favorite books, Houston-based trio Astragal formed in 2016 by way of serendipity in a Craigslist posting. Featuring Jimmy Bent on guitar and vocals, David Sosa on bass and Sam Enkelmann on drums, their instant fusion of friendship and creativity proved undeniable. The three-piece mixes elements of post-punk and indie-rock with plenty of pedal soaked sounds for an entirely immersive experience. Always consistent is their highly dynamic live show, exuding a vibrant magnetism that’s visible between the members as well as to their audience while onstage.
Their latest full length release, Pure Cashmere, is an album that both celebrates the past and questions it. Whereas the band's previous material celebrated nostalgia, both sonically and lyrically, Pure Cashmere is a plea for reality and the peace that can come when one welcomes and bears the weights of life: trauma, love, loss, death, addiction, and isolation. It’s an album about the pursuit of accountability and openness in working through a breadth of life experiences. Pure Cashmere is another sonic stepping stone in the band’s exploration of what it means to craft a musical dialogue between one another through an expressive yet in the pocket rhythm section and a wall of buoyant guitar driven melody. Pure Cashmere is available on vinyl through The Nothing Song.
