Jumanne Ramadhani Zegge, better known as Bamba Pana, is a Tanzanian producer associated with the Sisso collective and the extremely frenetic style known as singeli. His debut solo album, 2018's Poaa, contains tracks built from short, stuttering rhythmic loops played at impossibly fast speeds, earning comparisons to styles ranging from footwork to gabber.
Bamba Pana, along with other members of Sisso, is based in Tanzania's former capital city, Dar es Salaam. The singeli sound had been bubbling up for several years before becoming one of Tanzania's most popular styles of music by the late 2010s. Unlike the more polished, mainstream form of singeli, filled with slick, Auto-Tune-heavy singing, Sisso's sound has more of a punk energy, and often contains aggressive rapping. The collective's exhilarating, utterly unique brand of singeli was introduced to the rest of the world when Kampala, Uganda-based Nyege Nyege Tapes released the compilation Sounds of Sisso in 2017. Bamba Pana produced several tracks on the album, including the track by his frequent live collaborator Makaveli, Nammiliki. The following year, Pana's largely instrumental solo debut, Poaa, was issued by Nyege Nyege. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
