Benji. (born Ian Benjamin Welch) is an artist, producer, and musician raised in the Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, where the spirit of soul, gospel, and hip-hop shaped his roots. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist and electrifying performer, Benji. first turned heads when NPR named him one of their “20 Artists To Watch” in 2019.
The newest member of the genre-blending supergroup Spillage Village, Benji. certainly left a mark on their critically acclaimed 2020 album Spilligion. In 2021, he followed with the re-release of his solo debut Smile, You're Alive!, a radiant and emotionally nuanced album that turned life’s hardest truths into healing anthems.
Benji.’s artistry continued to evolve behind the boards, contributing to JID’s The Forever Story (2022), notably on the standout tracks “Kody Blu 31” and “Better Days,” and toured nationally with EarthGang as both an opening act, and bassist for the Atlanta duo. He also earned praise for his lush feature on their track “Bobby Boucher”, which even got a nod from Adam Sandler himself.
Now based in Los Angeles, Benji. continues to evolve with each release. Balancing depth and dynamism, soul and story, he’s building a body of work that sounds like memory, movement, and the meaning in between.
