b. Annette Kleinbard, 13 November 1940, New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA. Based in Los Angeles, California, USA, Connors began her singing career under her birth name as a member of the Teddy Bears, a late 50s vocal group that also featured Phil Spector in its line-up. She then recorded singles for Imperial Records and Dunes Records as Annette Bard and Carol Collins respectively. Her first single under her own name, released in 1961, coupled ‘You Are My Answer’ with ‘My Diary’. Both of these teen-orientated songs were written by Sandra Glantz, better known as Ginger Blake of the Honeys. Connors co-composed her next single, ‘Listen To The Beat’, with Steve Barri, the first of many such collaborations. Barri helped her write several subsequent singles, including ‘What Do You See In Him’ (1962) and ‘Angel My Angel’ (1964) and the pair were also members of the short-lived Storytellers (two singles for Dimension Records). In 1964 Connors co-composed ‘Hey Little Cobra’, a US Top 5 hit for the Rip Chords. This brought her into contact with several surf and drag acts, notably Dick Dale and Jan And Dean. Jan Berry and Terry Melcher helped Connors write ‘Go Go G.T.O.’, which she recorded in 1965 with her sister, Cheryl, as Carol And Cheryl. Connors’ 1966 single, ‘My Baby Looks But He Don’t Touch’, was composed in collaboration with Brian Wilson’s occasional partner, Roger Christian. The results were produced by a former member of the Teddy Bears, Marshall Leib.

Connors subsequently worked as a staff songwriter for Imperial Records, with the Sunshine Company, Cake and California Suns all recording her material. Although Connors’ involvement in pop lessened dramatically, she remained active as a composer, contributing scores to several Hollywood movies including two of the Rocky series. She also co-composed the Syreeta hit ‘With You I’m Born Again’.
