“This record’s biggest victory” they say, “is the fresh impetus it’s given our relationship”. For more than 18 years, Nina and Yoan have been making music together. With this third album, Cats on Trees have crafted their finest disc yet, but also affirmed the strength of the friendship that underpins it.
After two hit albums, Cats on Trees (2013) and Neon (2018), Nina and Yohan did what we all did: faced a pandemic crisis that forced them into lockdown, introspection… and, despite a period of bewilderment, into creating new work. The two musicians’ enforced separation, at first a necessity, turned into a deliverance. After an intense months-long tour, they were finally able to take a breather for the first time. Each of them worked at home, early in the morning or late into the night, sharing a hypersensitive dialogue via their respective screens. Once the health restrictions were lifted, they were able to get together in their Toulouse studio to finalise the recording, in a cheerful atmosphere they hadn’t experienced for a long time, shrugging off the pressure to share a bottle of wine and jam to a refrain composed around the table.
