Chico Bernardes is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from São Paulo, Brazil. In 2019, at age 20, he released his first solo record, self-titled Chico Bernardes, in which he recorded all the instruments, at the SP-based Estúdio Canoa. After that, Chico toured through a few Brazilian capitals, and also played across Portugal, making solo performances only with his voice and guitar, and sometimes piano.
During the pandemic, Chico started building his home studio, and collaborated with artists such as Luiza Brina (BR), Arthur Decloedt (BR), Paul Higgs (UY) and Christopher Bear (US), known for his work as drummer on the acclaimed indie band Grizzly Bear.
After that, Chico felt ready to work out a new solo record on his own, but this time at home. Opening up his doors into music production and engineering, he opened up some new landscapes into his palette, with synthesizers and new rhythms that differed from his first ‘folk-designed’ album. At that point, he understood the importance of having fun during the process, and trusting the instincts that can lead into a different and new result for a piece of work, artistically and phonographically.
Carrying references as Nick Drake, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Angelo de Augustine, Gilberto Gil, Joni Mitchell, Steve Reich and many others, Chico has been searching his own path into a blend of vintage and modern tones to surround his intimate and personal stories, as he puts out an ‘experimental-existentialist’ record.
