Chico César is a Brazilian singer and songwriter born in the city of Catolé do Rocha, in the state of Paraíba. He appeared on the national scene in 1995 with his first album, Aos Vivos, which already featured hits such as “Mama África” and “À Primeira Vista”. As a songwriter, he has been recorded by names such as Daniela Mercury and Maria Bethânia, among many others.

Among the awards and recognitions in his career are the Prêmio Sharp (newcomer – 1996), APCA (best songwriter – 1996) and MTV Video Music Brasil (best music video for “Mama África” – 1997).

As a public figure, he is highly relevant for his political activism, especially in causes involving black people and the rights of indigenous peoples. In 2023, he was awarded the Order of Rio Branco, in the Commander degree, by the federal government, and in 2025 he received the highest public honor in the Brazilian cultural sector, the Order of Cultural Merit, in the Grand Cross degree.

In 2021, Juliette Freire, a participant in the Big Brother Brasil program on TV Globo, sang the song “Deus Me Proteja” from the 2008 album Francisco, forró y frevo, and caused a significant increase in the number of views not only of this song but of Chico César’s entire discography – the artist grew 173% on Spotify. In 2023, the Violivoz tour, with Geraldo Azevedo, gained an audiovisual recording, which surpassed 2 million views in a short period of time.
