In the early ’70s, a young Sharen Clark cut the only four sides of her career. Under the stewardship of Gene “Bowlegs” Miller—an accomplished trumpeter, songwriter, arranger, performer, and producer—Clark and her backing band, The Product of Time, first laid down “I’m Not Afraid of Love.” It’s a sweet-and-slow Uptown ballad featuring graceful strings and punchy male backing vocals. The 45 was backed with “Mama Didn’t Lie (Sho Come True),” a southern soul ditty with Memphis funk flair. The East St. Louis-based Yodi Records released the single in 1971 and followed up with Clark’s “That’s a Good Reason” b/w “It’s Not Your Business.” Miller flexes his horn-arranging muscles on the A-side, which is a sultry love song complete with a robust horn section. On the flip, the horns gallop along with Clark’s vocal gymnastics, imbuing a dose of funk into the track.
