Somewhere off a dusty highway - the kind that only exists in your rearview mirror - there’s a bar with one flickering light and a jukebox stuck on the wrong side of midnight. It’s here, in this fever dream, you’ll find South-East London four-piece Club Lex channelling their genre-bending blend of 50s rock and roll, psychobilly, surf and punk. Their self-coined ‘Western Goth’ creeps in like smoke under the door: twanging guitars soaked in reverb, bass grooves that throb like a hangover heartbeat, and rhythms that lurch forward like a car pulling out of town with no headlights. It nods to the ghosts of Poison Ivy, Link Wray and Wanda Jackson with shades of The Cramps and an undeniable snarl that echoes Fat White Family and The Amazing Snakeheads.
But this isn’t just a revival - it’s a reimagining. Their debut EP, Welcome to The Club, sounds like it’s been ripped from the static of a late-night radio station. It’s an invitation. A first step into the world of Club Lex. At the centre is a shadowy figure known as The Handsome Killer - a brooding antihero stitched together from outlaw movies. Each track plays like a scene from his world, unfolding in a haze of love, violence, regret and redemption.
The band have left the engine running with more magnetic shows that dare you not to dance and a string of new material coming in 2025, expanding their world one scene at a time. Expect more stories, more noise, and more of the reckless heart that’s fast becoming their trademark.
