In 1997, German high school buddies Philipp Grütering, Malte Pittner and Buddy Buxbaum formed the refreshingly controversial Deichkind. 1999 the label Warner’s Showdown, signed them after Deichkind released their second EP Kabeljau Inferno. Just a few months later, Bitte Ziehen Sie Durch, Deichkind's first album, was released nationwide and the single Bon Voyage landed the band a spot in every festival in the country.
The band's follow-up album Noch Fünf Minuten Mutti, was released in 2002, and employed Deichkind's trademark skits and humorous lyrics. In the course of the 2000s, the band disappeared from the picture surface every now and then. However, after Malte and Buddy jumped ship, they were to be replaced by bassist Porky Codex and Hamburg rapper Ferris MC. With the new members Deichkind released their fourth album, Arbeit Nervt in 2008. Four years later the band published Befehl Von Ganz Unten.
The band uses its success to repeatedly intervene in various debates. Until today, they make a clear statement on refugee policy.
The singles Bück Dich Hoch and Leider Geil are awarded with gold, with the latter becoming so widespread in the media that the slogan Leider Geil enters the common parlance of Germans-speaking countries. Under their self-founded record label Sultan Günther Music the album Niveau Weshalb Warum (2015) was released, in 2019 Wer Sagt Denn Das? and their latest album in 2023 Neues Vom Dauerzustand.
