b. 24 January 1948, Clapham, London, England. Better known as an actor on British television, Dennis Waterman also had a briefly successful singing career in the early 80s. He recorded his first two albums while playing DS George Carter in late 70s police drama The Sweeney. With a typically boisterous delivery matching the tempestuous nature of his character, neither album managed to chart. However, success arrived when Waterman played Terry McCann in the television series Minder and the theme tune ‘I Could Be So Good For You’, which he wrote as well as sang, reached number 3 in the UK charts in 1980. It was followed by a duet with his co-star George Cole, the title of which played upon a phrase used by Cole’s character Arthur Daley in the television series: ‘What Are We Gonna Get ‘Er Indoors?’. This reached number 21 in December 1983. However, subsequent releases were less successful. The theme tunes of Waterman’s next two television series, Stay Lucky and On The Up, both of which he again wrote, failed to chart. In 1993 Waterman played an ageing rock ‘n’ roll star in the West End musical, A Slice Of Saturday Night. He continued to be a regular face on UK television screens into the new millennium, despite being mercilessly lampooned in the comedy series Little Britain.
