Dive Index

Dive Index is a collaborative electronic project based in Los Angeles lead by composer/producer Will Thomas and features a variety of guest vocalists and musicians. Associated with the independent label Neutral Music, Dive Index made its full-length album debut in 2007 with Mid/Air. In addition to Thomas, the catalog features vocalists Joseph Arthur, Mark Gardener (Ride) Natalie Walker, Merz, Ian Masters (Pale Saints), Simone White as well as musicians Kevin O'Donnell, C.J. Camerieri, Julia Kent, Maxim Moston and Alison Chesley. A remix collection, Collisions: The Mid/Air Remixes, features contributions from the Album Leaf, Tunng, Jason Bentley, Roger Eno, and Beat Pharmacy, among others.

Waving At Airplanes, the fifth full-length, alternates between vocalists Natalie Walker and Merz. For this album Thomas set specific parameters to his production writing process sourcing almost everything (percussion included) from modular synthesizer. The only exceptions are piano, acoustic guitar, and occasional extraneous sounds – nail gun, jackhammer – that leaked into the studio.
The songs were mostly recorded in Thomas’ studio near L.A.’s Laurel Canyon (with Merz contributing remotely from Joshua Tree), Waving At Airplanes was mastered by Mike Bozzi at Hollywood’s legendary Bernie Grundman Mastering. The record is at once an audiophile delight and, warmed by Walker’s finely-grained timbre and Merz’s emotive expressions, a reassuringly visceral expression. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
