Michigan-based producer Mike Dykehouse (yes, that's his real surname) debuted in 2001 with Dynamic Obsolescence, an album of alternately crunchy and melodic IDM released by Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu label. A set of new recordings, including a faithful take on <a href="spotify:artist:3G3Gdm0ZRAOxLrbyjfhii5">My Bloody Valentine</a>'s version of <a href="spotify:artist:2i8ynmFv4qgRksyDlBgi6d">Wire</a>'s "Map Ref. 41 Degrees North 93 Degrees West," caught the ear of Ann Arbor's Ghostly International, leading to that song's official release on the label's Idol Tryouts compilation. Early 2004 saw the release of the Chain Smoking 7", which set up the full-length Midrange, released that May. A solid shoegaze throwback, the album was created on an iMac with a microphone and a Fender Jazzmaster. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
