It's been thirty years since we formed earwig while we were at university. Our early attempts at scratchy spiteful indie pop songs (see our first two eps hardly and might) quickly transformed into something more elaborate. We rehearsed obsessively, our sound constantly evolving as we introduced electronic elements and our range of influences widened. The subtract ep serves as a bridge between those early days and what was to come on our LP under my skin, I am laughing. By now, Kirsty's voice had dropped almost to a whisper and the music, repetitive and claustrophobic.
Recently, we have gained ownership of the copyright to our back catalogue and are now in possession of the digital masters.
We wanted to go back and listen again to the LP with older and wiser ears. We were a particularly insular trio at the time, not permitting any outside interference in the recording process. Now we have had the opportunity to remaster the LP, taking advantage of Julian's long experience in the recording studio, to try to address some of the obvious flaws in the original mix. Unfortunately the original analogue recordings have been lost, so a complete remix of the album has not been possible, but we feel that the new remastered versions of these songs are an improvement on the original versions.
