The hook on the first track on Erick Serna’s “Fire Away” asks a simple question “Are you a ruler or a rebel?” As the epic 10-track debut album plays out, the consistent theme and tension of power vs. revolution unveils itself over a beautiful rollercoaster of powerful percussion, otherworldly sound-design, ambient textures, and Serna’s hauntingly powerful voice on top of it all.

“Fire Away” is a gorgeous medley of high-energy cinematic musical moments delicately balanced with more serene and quiet moments to quickly catch your breath as you prepare for the next instrumental rise and cathartic drop. With so many unique magical sonic moments, “Fire Away” is a twisty journey of surreal empowerment.

Serna spent six months isolated in various Los Angeles studios as he looked inward towards the “darker side” of his personality for this project. A self-proclaimed “sponge” of movies and tv shows, Serna uses his innate curiosity to identify and spur his musical creative muses. This results in an eclectic mix of different musical ideas yet remains cohesive due to everything —from the writing to the production to the vocals to the final mixing— being routed through Serna, and Serna only.

It’s rare to find an album so grandiose come from just one person’s brain, yet Serna pulls it off and then some. His music conjures up visions of superheroes, yet “Fire Away” proves that Serna is actually a musical superhero in his own right.
