I joined my first band when I was 13 years old. It was 1980. The Undertakers. We were all mad about ska music. 2Tone had arrived. The Specials, The Beat, Madness, The Selecter, The Bodysnatchers and I know they weren’t really ska or 2Tone, but I loved UB40 and Dexys Midnight Runners too. I knew about 5 chords and was responsible for rhythm guitar and vocals.
We wrote a few of our own songs. I was mainly responsible for the lyrics. It was fun, but it didn’t last. We played one gig and went our own ways after our O Levels. 45 years later, I still love ska and reggae and I know a few more than 5 chords now. I can’t seem to stop writing songs. As well as guitar, I now play bass, a little sax and I dabble with keyboard (I love the sound of a piano on one of my songs), I tend to play the drums electronically and I have played a little harmonica on some of my songs.
I have written, played, mixed, produced and released about 70 songs in the last 12 months. It’s pretty obvious which ones were my early releases. The production leaves a lot to be desired. I keep meaning to rework some of them, but I always seem to be working on new stuff. It’s not all ska and reggae based. There are a few that are just pure pop. Some are very synth pop sounding. But they all allude to that 80s vibe.
