In 2014 Iain Campbell found himself standing in front of “The Queen’s Temple” in a forest in Buckingham, England, faced by walls of shimmering analog synthesizers and 5.1 surround speakers. As the assistant to eminent Hollywood composer Harry Gregson-Williams (Shrek, Call of Duty, Prometheus) he had been tasked to install electricity into this ancient building to assist in a year of composing where Hollywood would meet pastoral England. Iain and his wife, Rebecca, lived in the small village of Syresham nearby. Having met on tour for a previous musical incarnation at the age of 20 they lived in vans and planes together becoming near mortal enemies almost immediately. A year later they headlined a stage at Glastonbury, appeared live on Radio 1 and were happily married. After work they cycled 25 minutes through a forest to reach the temple in the evenings and begin work on their side-hustle: Ex Makina. Several months later they emerged with their first fruits. Anima is the First EP by Ex Makina, written and recorded in The Queen’s Temple, Buckingham, and later mixed in Edinburgh, Scotland.
