Factory 81 was formed in the suburbs of Detroit, MI in 1997. The band consisted of Nathan Wallace (vocals), Bill Schultz (guitar), Kevin Lewis (bass), and Andy Cyrulnik (Drums). With their energetic live shows, the band quickly gained a devoted following in the Detroit scene. As the crowd sizes grew, their live shows started to look more and more as if a national act was performing. This started to draw attention from record labels and management. Factory 81 originally released their debut album, Mankind, on the Michigan independent label Medea Records in 1999. This helped to increase the bands visibility which eventually led to them signing with Mojo/Universal Records. Mojo/Universal re-released Mankind in October of 2000. The band toured extensively following the national release. After years of touring the band started to work on their follow up to Mankind, but ultimately decided to disband in the winter of 2003. Bill Schultz and Kevin Lewis have since gone on to form Minus Knives.
