Created in December 2018 by Guillaume Jannin (bass,
programming, vocals) and Yann Giraud (guitar, vocals),
Fleur du Mal has released a first single, two EPs, Spleen I in 2019 and Spleen
II in 2020w A mix of shoegaze guitar layers, post-
metal riffage and indie pop melodies sung exclusively in
French. Having only given a single show
in February 2020, the duo, like many other bands, found themselves deprived of concerts
and therefore focused on recording the
band’s first album, Spleen III wich represents a significant evolution of Fleur du Mal’s sound. The duo
recruited Erwan Colin on drums. Bringing a richer
and punchier sound, the drums set the tone to a metal record. The group turned to Étienne
Sarthou (<a href="spotify:artist:37P7yznrsIGSfuGOzmmt26" data-name="AqME">AqME</a> , <a href="spotify:artist:73YNQEc40Hrrh6kGQGkY0f" data-name="Karras">Karras</a> , <a href="spotify:artist:155tbahrWggqUnWxKhkX4U" data-name="Deliverance">Deliverance</a>) to produce the album and to Magnus
Lindberg (<a href="spotify:artist:7E7fJJpdVgr1F3pfAfRtHe" data-name="Cult Of Luna">Cult Of Luna</a> ) to master it. Spleen III is leaning on alternative metal and blackgaze, bringing in
mind bands such as <a href="spotify:artist:6Ghvu1VvMGScGpOUJBAHNH" data-name="Deftones">Deftones</a> , <a href="spotify:artist:4XpPveeg7RuYS3CgLo75t9" data-name="Deafheaven">Deafheaven</a> or <a href="spotify:artist:0d5ZwMtCer8dQdOPAgWhe7" data-name="Alcest">Alcest</a> . The vocals are more frontal and
assertive, ranging from clean to screamo. Fleur du Mal’s lyrics deal with our ability to
be moved by the beauties of the world ("Grâce"), our daily anxieties ("Kasiranga"),
physical love ("180"), addictions ("Silence", "Chemtrails") and the current pandemic
("Bergson"). As on their first two EPs, the group decided to pay tribute to one of their
favorite French artists.
