Not to be confused with the American band of a similar name (the Flying Machine, of <a href="spotify:artist:0vn7UBvSQECKJm2817Yf1P">James Taylor</a> fame), Flying Machine was a British studio band formed by producer/songwriters <a href="spotify:artist:40INU8pCmyLX9yXB9sCThG">Tony Macaulay</a> (best known for his work with <a href="spotify:artist:4GITZM5LCR2KcdlgEOrNLD">the Foundations</a>) and <a href="spotify:artist:5jYOBOYIIS1AfJn6L8wS79">Geoff Stevens</a>, partly out of the remnants of <a href="spotify:artist:4Qfi6103G99wzXS0XtIe3K">Pinkerton's Assorted Colours</a> (aka <a href="spotify:artist:4Qfi6103G99wzXS0XtIe3K">the Pinkertons</a>), with guitarist <a href="spotify:artist:6Y2CBRm7pNc1tcYfzi4H2D">Tony Newman</a> on vocals, <a href="spotify:artist:2s3VN6FjmyuvBZnABKaMyq">Steve Jones</a> on lead guitar and vocals, Sam Kempe on vocals, <a href="spotify:artist:4NS0JB3jJMljOjhmtoI3Vm">Stuart Colman</a> on bass, and Paul Wilkinson on drums. The group's sound ranged from pop to light psychedelia, and they released a string of singles on <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Pye%22">Pye</a> in 1969 and 1970, culminating with the album Down to Earth with the Flying Machine in 1970. All of their work was compiled on a two-CD set from <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Sequel%22">Sequel</a> called Flight Recorder in 1998. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
