Gates Of Doom are formed in 2012 in Friûl (North-east Italy). After a self-titled EP influenced by scandinavian melodic death metal, many concerts and some lineup changes, in 2018 they publish a second EP titled Forum Ivlii. This EP reflects a change in both sound and themes toward a more complex and personal style that blends the heavyness and speed of death metal, the atmosphere and acoustic phrasings of black metal, and guitars influenced by '80s heavy metal in a setting related to the history and identity of the band's homeland.

The first full-length “Aquileia Mater Aeterna” is a further step in this direction. A seven track concept album on the city of Aquileia, founded by the Romans as a military colony in 181 B.C and quickly turned into one of the main cities of the Empire and a crossroads of cultures. Destroyed by Attila in 452 A.D during the Huns incursions but rebuilt in later centuries, the city became a symbol for the birth of the Patriarchy of Aquileia in 1077 and for the language and culture of Friûl.
