German Brass owes its success to its sound. As a pioneer among brass ensembles, German Brass has not only written music history since its founding in 1974, but is continuously continuing its success story. The ten solo brass players and university professors distinguish themselves by uncompromisingly creating this genuine sound of their ensemble, finding and inventing it anew in every concert and every recording. Sound is celebrated at German Brass - and thus becomes an experience for the audience.
German Brass has been performing in this formation ever since the celebrations for Johann Sebastian Bach, the tonal idea generator of the legendary German Brass Sound, led to the final instrumentation with ten wind players in 1984. Brass chamber music has long since become an integral part of national and international concert life, and German Brass has lived up to its reputation as a pioneer over the decades. The arrangements by Mathias Höfs and Alexander Erbrich-Crawford, specially tailored to the artistic and technical excellence of the ensemble members, have long since become classics in the brass repertoire. The repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the 20th century, and concerts often conclude with an international variety of popular selections such as jazz, bossa nova. German Brass enliven their concerts with humorous commentary from the stage. The ensemble is perhaps most notable internationally for its recording career, which by 2025 included more than 30 albums.
